African print fabric, often referred to as Ankara or Dutch wax print, actually has its origins in Indonesia. The fabric was initially created in the mid-19th century by Dutch merchants who were inspired by Indonesian batik. These merchants introduced the vibrant, wax-resist dyed fabrics to West Africa, where the prints were embraced and adapted into the rich, colorful patterns we associate with African textiles today.
